First rest day: Burgos, museum, and new discoveries.
June 23, rest day in Burgos (without walking).
This was going to be my first rest day without setting off, but the alarm rang early anyway: first because I had to change albergue (the one where I was accepted people only for 1 day), and then because I wanted to walk around the city.
I arranged with Ocean to go to the Museum of Human Evolution. We agreed to meet there at 9:30, but then we discovered it opened at 10:00, so we had to wait.
The visit was very interesting. Maybe I was the one who had understood little in the past, but it was there that the light really switched on for me about the fact that for a period Sapiens and Neanderthals coexisted on Earth. Ocean already knew this very well: you could tell she had paid more attention at school than me, haha.
And here an important clarification: it was not a simple “fight” won by the more intelligent against the stronger one. Today we know the story is more complex: Neanderthals were very adapted to their environment, there were also interbreeding events with Sapiens, and their disappearance is probably linked to a combination of factors (climate, demography, social networks, mobility, and cultural innovations).
During the day there was also a parade with masks through the streets: the city was full of movement. And finally the Orisson group, together with Catherine, had all arrived in Burgos. I was happy: the group had reunited. In the evening we had a huge table at Cafe Ibanez, very fun and very pleasant. Giselle, Chris, and Jessica were there too, in addition to Catherine and the Orisson group.
Urban day, rhythm different from the trail: zero kilometers on foot, but a head full of curiosity and light conversations around Burgos.
Even rest days can be a full part of the Camino: you recover your body and, at the same time, widen your perspective.
Albergue change in the morning (required by the one-night limit) and city day with a visit to the Museum of Human Evolution together with Ocean.
If reading this diary makes you feel the Camino might be calling you, but you still need to clarify a few things, start with the free guide.
